Hugh MacInnes is a business, human rights and employment lawyer with 24 years of experience helping companies big and small solve problems and achieve their goals.
Born in Nova Scotia and raised in Summerland, Hugh’s studies took him to St. Olaf College in Minnesota and then the University of British Columbia to study law. He spent summers working as a ranch hand, a millworker and running a cattle range fencing business—experiences that would earn Hugh a reputation as ‘down to earth’ as he began to guide executives and entrepreneurs, and their teams.
After 13 years as in-house counsel for Weyerhaeuser, an international forest products company, Hugh returned to private practice where he worked as a contract in-house lawyer for Weyerhaeuser and others—advising businesses and employers in a range of areas, including business, employment, human rights, corporate/commercial, technology, forest, environmental, and competition law. Hugh was pleased to join Gillespie in 2014.
When he’s not walking clients through solutions and strategies, you’re apt to find Hugh teaching his grandkids to ski at Sun Peaks, cheering on the Boston Bruins, or trying to emulate the late and great defenceman Red Kelly on the ice. He’s also an avid cyclist and volunteer with the BC Summer Games, the Canada Summer Games and the Canadian Road Cycling Championships. He has donated his time with the Thompson Nicola Cariboo United Way (TNCUW) for almost 15 years off and on, and currently chairs the Board of Directors.
